A June 2026 survey of EV owners tells a different story. While 35% of owners have never come close to running out of charge, nearly 31% of owners run unexpectedly low on charge four or more times a month. That is not a perception problem dissolving after a few confident drives. That is a recurring operational failure, happening monthly, for nearly one in three owners. The data does not show a product that works well for most people and poorly for a few. It shows something more uncomfortable: two almost entirely separate ownership experiences, with very little in the middle. Understanding which one you are likely to get is the most important research you can do before signing anything.


The Bimodal Problem: Why Averages Lie About EVs

Ask most people how EV ownership goes and they will give you an average: generally fine, a few hiccups, worth it overall. The survey data does not support that framing.

On virtually every question in this dataset, responses cluster at the extremes rather than the middle. Pre-purchase range anxiety scores pile up at 1 ("not at all concerned") and 5 ("extremely concerned"), with relatively few owners landing at 2, 3, or 4. Satisfaction follows the same pattern: 32% of owners say the experience has been "much better" than expected and they wish they had switched sooner. Another 28% say it has been "much worse" than expected and they have serious regrets. Only 15% land in the neutral middle.

This is not statistical noise. It is the central fact about EV ownership that the industry's marketing consistently obscures. EVs are not a broadly consistent product with minor variation. They are a product that works brilliantly for one type of driver and poorly for another, and the gap between those two groups is wide.

The shape of that gap follows a predictable logic. Owners who do well tend to have short, predictable daily commutes that stay well within charging range, reliable home charging in place, and local infrastructure that supports their driving patterns. Owners who struggle tend to have longer or less predictable driving needs, limited or no home charging, and geographic coverage gaps that leave them dependent on public chargers that may or may not be functional when needed.

The industry knows this. It has not been particularly transparent about it.


Range Anxiety Is Real And It Does Not Go Away After Purchase

The reassurance that range anxiety fades after purchase is worth examining carefully, because this data directly contradicts it.

Among owners surveyed, 56.9% experience unexpected low charge at least occasionally. That includes 30.8% who face it four or more times per month. For these owners, range anxiety has not dissolved into confidence. It has become a concrete operational constraint that shapes their driving decisions every week.

The Range Claims Credibility Gap

Part of what drives post-purchase dissatisfaction is a problem that starts before the buyer ever takes delivery: manufacturer range estimates that do not match real-world performance.

Among owners who have tracked their real-world range against advertised figures, 37.1% say actual performance is worse than claimed. Another 27.2% say it is "much worse." Only 12.3% report exceeding the manufacturer's estimate.

This matters because the range figure is often the primary technical specification a buyer uses to assess whether an EV fits their life. If a commuter buys a vehicle rated at 300 miles of range and consistently gets 210 miles in cold weather or at highway speeds, they have been sold on a number that does not describe the vehicle they actually drive.

Manufacturer range figures are typically calculated under optimal conditions. Real-world performance varies significantly based on temperature, speed, driving style, climate control use, and vehicle age. This is knowable. It is often not disclosed clearly at the point of sale.


The Infrastructure Failure

Among owners who report charging frustrations, the top two complaints are public chargers being out of service or occupied and limited charging options in their area. Cold weather reducing battery range came third.

Notice what these have in common: they are infrastructure failures outside the driver's control. A driver can adjust their behavior to manage concern about running low. They cannot fix a broken charger or build a new station in an underserved area. This is what makes charging infrastructure the sharpest source of frustration in the dataset. The problem is real, it is not the driver's fault, and there is often nothing they can do about it in the moment.


The Owners Who Regret It: Understanding the 28%

28% of EV owners in this survey say their experience has been much worse than expected, and they have serious regrets about the purchase. For a high-cost, considered purchase made after significant research, that is a large number.

What the Regretful Owner Looks Like

The data points toward a consistent profile. The dissatisfied owner is disproportionately likely to be among the 30.8% running low on charge four or more times per month. They are among the 37% whose real-world range falls short of what was advertised. They are dealing with public charging infrastructure that is unreliable, geographically sparse, or both. Their daily driving patterns may exceed what their vehicle's real-world range comfortably supports. And they probably were not given clear information at the point of sale about which of these risks applied to them specifically.

What the Satisfied Owner Looks Like

The 32% who wish they had switched sooner tend to inhabit a different set of circumstances. Their daily commute stays comfortably within the charge range. Home charging is installed and reliable. Their local public infrastructure is adequate for the occasional trip that requires it. Their vehicle's real-world range roughly matches what they expected. They are among the 12.3% who actually get better range than advertised, or at least the 19.8% who find it roughly accurate.

Same product. Radically different lives.

The Word-of-Mouth Consequence

The implications for EV adoption are significant. When asked what they would tell a friend who was hesitant about buying an EV due to range anxiety, 31.4% of current owners said they would actively discourage the purchase. Another 12.8% said to wait until the charging infrastructure improves. Combined, 44.2% of current owners are giving hesitant prospective buyers reasons not to buy.

Only 20.9% offer an unqualified positive recommendation.


The $200-a-Month Saving Nobody Is Talking About

Here is the counterintuitive finding in this dataset: 26% of EV owners save more than $200 per month on fuel. That is a genuine, substantial financial win that ought to be a central part of the EV value proposition.

It is not, for two reasons.

First, 35% of buyers did not factor fuel savings into their purchase decision at all. Second, 39% of current owners have never calculated what they are actually saving. The financial case for EV ownership is real, achievable, and being almost entirely ignored by both buyers and the industry's marketing.

Why the Savings Story Is Not Getting Through

The numbers support the financial argument. Among owners who modeled fuel savings before buying, 29.1% estimated savings above $200 per month. Among current owners who track it, 26% achieve that threshold. The estimates were reasonably accurate.

Three factors suppress the financial narrative.

  • The conversation is dominated by range anxiety. It is hard for a savings argument to compete with the visceral concern of being stranded somewhere.
  • Buyers may not trust projected savings figures, particularly after encountering other EV claims that did not hold up. If a vehicle's range estimate proved inaccurate, why would a dealer's fuel savings projection be more reliable?
  • The savings are unevenly distributed. They depend on local electricity rates, home charging access, and how many miles a driver covers. A buyer who drives 8,000 miles a year and pays low electricity rates is not going to save $200 a month. A buyer who drives 20,000 miles a year with cheap overnight charging is.

This is, again, the bimodal problem. EV ownership is not a product with consistent benefits that apply roughly equally to all buyers. The financial case is strong for some people and weak for others, and the industry has not built tools that help buyers figure out which one they are.


What to Do With This Information

If you are considering an EV purchase, the data above points toward a specific pre-purchase checklist that is more useful than any amount of test driving.

  • Run The Real-World Range Audit. Find owner forums for the specific vehicle you are considering, in your climate, at your typical driving speeds. Real-world range in those conditions is the number that matters, not the manufacturer's rated figure.
  • Run The Charging Infrastructure Map. Locate every public charger within your likely travel radius. Check reliability ratings and reviews, not just existence. A charger that is frequently out of service or consistently occupied does not count as infrastructure.
  • Calculate your actual fuel savings with your actual numbers. Your mileage, your electricity rate, your current fuel cost. If the math is not compelling for your specific situation, the financial case does not apply to you the way it does to the 26% saving $200 a month.
  • Talk to an owner with your specific circumstances. Same commute distance, similar climate, similar charging access. Their experience is predictive in a way that general reviews are not.
  • Factor in the word-of-mouth data. The 44% of owners who would counsel hesitation are not all complainers. Many of them are people who had legitimate range and infrastructure problems that were not disclosed to them at the point of sale. Take their category of concern seriously.

What a Vehicle History Report Tells You That a Test Drive Cannot

A test drive tells you how an EV feels on a familiar route, in current weather, with a full charge. It does not tell you how the battery has degraded over its ownership history, whether previous owners returned or sold the vehicle after short ownership periods that might reflect dissatisfaction, or whether the vehicle's recorded mileage patterns are consistent with the range performance you are being quoted.

If three previous owners each held the car for less than a year, that pattern is worth understanding before you become the fourth. If the mileage entries do not track consistently with the range claims being made for the vehicle, that gap is visible in the data.

The physical inspection tells you what the car looks like today. The vehicle history report can tell you what might’ve happened to it, and how many have decided to move on from it.

Methodology

This analysis draws on survey data collected via Hotjar across two days in early June 2026, yielding 4,808 total respondents. Of those, 642 (13.4%) identified as current EV owners and form the primary dataset for all ownership findings.

Not all 642 owners answered every question. Response counts drop significantly across the later sections of the survey, from roughly 300 respondents on early questions to between 86 and 195 on later ones. This pattern is consistent with survey fatigue or conditional branching logic that routed some respondents past certain questions. Where response counts fall below the full owner sample, the relevant base is noted.

The survey audience was heavily US-centric: 76.6% of all respondents were based in the United States. Among EV owners specifically, the US share drops to 50.8%, with the remainder distributed across Mexico, Canada, Central America, the Middle East, and Central Asia. EV ownership rates in several international countries appear unusually high (Guatemala 38.9%, El Salvador 53.3%, Kyrgyzstan approximately 57%) and likely reflect sampling bias at the site level rather than genuine ownership patterns in those markets. International subgroups are excluded from ownership-specific findings unless otherwise noted.

All percentages are rounded to one decimal place. Where sample sizes for a given question fall below 100, findings are flagged as directional rather than statistically definitive.
