Pedestrian Deaths Up 13% Nationwide; October Is the Deadliest Month
As daylight dwindles in October and temperatures begin to drop, the risk of pedestrians being fatally struck by cars rises to the highest level of any other month of the year, according to a Bumper review of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Traffic accidents increased during the pandemic years, and so, too, have fatalities of pedestrians—in fact, pedestrian fatalities nationwide increased 13.12% per 100,000 population in 2021, the most recent year of available data, compared to the average from 2019 and 2020.

Most Popular Cars Sold in 2023 (So Far): Nationwide and by State
Which new and used vehicles are the most popular so far this year? The Bumper Marketplace tracked the movement of the top cars, trucks and SUVs at more than 50,000 car dealerships across the country to determine the best-selling vehicles nationwide and by state in the first eight months of the year. Important note: New car sales from dealerships included 2022, 2023 and 2024 model years. Popular electric car maker Tesla is not included in the new car sales figures as Tesla sells directly to consumers rather than through car dealerships.

Summer Tragedy: Which States See the Most Teen Driving Fatalities?
As teenagers celebrate the prom, graduation ceremonies and summer school breaks, highway safety officials prepare for a more grim season—the “100 deadliest days” for traffic accidents. Young drivers are statistically more likely than other age groups to be involved in fatal accidents. As we enter the summer months, Bumper.com analyzed traffic fatalities to estimate which states see a higher likelihood of teen deaths. We found Wyoming has the highest percentage of summer teenage driving fatalities—more than half of all teenage driving deaths happen between the months of June and September.

EV Deserts: County Economic Groups Show EV Charger Divide Across US States
Electric vehicle “charging deserts,” places where electric-vehicle recharging stations and the number of charge ports are in short supply, stretch across states, largely divided by economic and racial lines, according to new analysis by Bumper.com. Looking at a range of fiscal and societal factors, our Distressed County Index shows that the top fifth of US counties account for nearly one-third (32.60%) of all EV charge ports in the country. The bottom fifth of US counties have access to less than 20% of EV charging stations and charge ports.
