Which new and used vehicles are the most popular so far this year? The Bumper Marketplace tracked the movement of the top cars, trucks and SUVs at more than 50,000 car dealerships across the country to determine the best-selling vehicles nationwide and by state in the first eight months of the year.

Important note: New car sales from dealerships included 2022, 2023 and 2024 model years. Popular electric car maker Tesla is not included in the new car sales figures as Tesla sells directly to consumers rather than through car dealerships.

Top selling used cars by state in 2023 (so far)

Nine different vehicle models have claimed top spots for best-selling used car by state, but let’s face it—it’s an F-150 world, as the storied pickup truck came out on top in 39 states, according to Bumper Marketplace data.

Most popular new car lists show that the Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverado series are most popular, as the car makers don’t release sales for individual F-Series and Silverado models. Indeed, looking at the first eight months shows that’s true when we roll up all sales of the F-Series (357,153) and the Silverado series (306,692).

However, when the Bumper Marketplace analyzed the sales of the specific F-Series and Silverado models, a different view emerged.
